Barrea (AQ), in the Parco Nazionale d’Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise, is a mountain borgo set in a romantic, fairy-tale natural setting. Beneath it, the lake which shares its name, created by the manmade damming of the river Sangro, is surrounded by superb treetops, thick beechwoods, clear courses of water. The historical centre has the typical structure of a fortified borgo, ringed by defensive walls and featuring alleyways, traditional stone houses, ancient churches, palaces, convent and a medieval castle with an extraordinary panoramic view. The main road through the centre of the village offers another stunning scenic point with unparalleled views over the lake. The same feeling of enchantment characterises the neighbouring villages of Villetta Barrea and Civitella Alfedena. Hiking trails leave Barrea leading to Grotta dello Schievo and two natural lakes, Lake Pantaniello and Lake Vivo. The latter is known as vivo/alive because, exceptionally sensitive to the changing seasons, it varies in dimension continually, even drying up almost completely in the summer.
