The manmade lake of Campotosto (province of L’Aquila) is located within the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, at 1,313 metres above sea level. It is the biggest lake in Abruzzo with a 14 km2 surface area and roughly 42km perimeter.
The landscape is characterised by the marvellous contrast between the immense stretch of water and the slopes of Gran Sasso which stand out in the background. The beautiful, serene natural landscape is reflected in the water which is surrounded by fields, willow trees, beech and chestnut woods that take on a thousand different hues with the changing seasons.
This area is also interesting for its fauna and is a popular destination for birdwatchers.
