The Opera Theatre of Rome, also known as the Costanzi Theatre after its founder Domenico Costanzi, is the city’s centre for Opera and Ballet. It can accommodate approx. 1600 people.
Built between 1874 and 1880, it was acquired in 1926 by the Municipality of Rome who took on its management and entrusted the work of extension and restructuring to the architect Marcello Piacentini, who completely refaced the exterior, added a row of boxes (bringing them up to 4) and installed an extraordinary Bohemian crystal chandelier. In 1930, a reed organ was installed by the organ makers Buccolini, hidden to the right to the stage by a grill (the same company restored it in 2004). When the country became a Republic, the prefix Royal was removed from the building’s name and in 1956 the municipality asked Piacentini to oversee new additions and refurbishment. The work, which included the creation of a central staircase, a foyer with boxes, office rooms, new furnishings and the refacing of the facade in 19th century style, was completed in 1960.
