The film interweaves parallel stories about a group of friends brought together by their common rejection of getting older. Shot entirely in Rome, the exterior scenes are mostly based around the story of Franco, a 70 year old sports fanatic. He collapses during a game of tennis with his son-in-law Lorenzo at the Foro Italico and, despite being forbidden to put himself through physical stress, continues to train for the Marathon. When Lorenzo finds out, he promises to keep the secret as long as he can join him. This sets up a tour of the most beautiful streets and sights of the city, which includes the Colosseum, Teatro Marcello, Castel Sant’Angelo, Via della Conciliazione and Lungotevere. The day of the marathon coincides with that of an important audition for Lorenzo who wants to become first violin. The audition is held at the Teatro dell’Opera, whose stage was dressed by the Teatro Petruzzelli di Bari.
