In the second half of the 1800s, the Municipality of Terni decided to propose the city as an industrial production site. Accordingly, a derivation of the Rivera Nera, the 3km long Canale Nerino, was built in 1979, near Pentima, with a carrying capacity of 27 cubic metres per second. Its purpose was to supply the energy requirements of the Fabbrica d’Armi (weapons factory), built on the outskirts of the city in 1881, and to support the development and consolidation of significant private businesses such as the Jutificio Centurini (jute works), the Lanificio (wool mill) and the Foundry.
This water system, the first development of its kind aimed specifically at supporting industry in the country, guaranteed a supply of energy essential to the creation of the Terni Steelworks in 1884.
The first steelworks in Italy, and the metal-working cluster that grew up around it, brought radical transformation to the urban structure of the city and the landscape of the entire valley. Very little remains of the original mills in Viale Brin, however the workers’ housing built by the Società Terni in 1884 can still be seen.
