Iglesias is situated in the southwestern area (Sulcis-Iglesiente) of Sardinia. It is a Spanish word meaning 'churches'. Among its attractions there is, the celebration of the Holy Week rituals in the forms and colours of 17th-century Spanish tradition. Various churches worth a visit: the Cathedral of Santa Chiara, dating back to the 8th century, the Church of Madonna delle Grazie and that of San Francesco. Furthermore, the historical-religious mining route of Santa Barbara starts in Iglesias: 400km in several stages, to be covered on foot or by mountain bike, on a journey of discovery of the Sulcis area.
The mines were the wealth of the Iglesias area for many decades. Today, they are an archaeological and industrial heritage inside the Geological and Mining Park of Sardinia, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The Museum of Mining Art and the Museum of Machinery trace its development, while some guided tours in the Mine of Monteponi, in San Giovanni di Domusnovas and in Masua allow us to get 'inside' knowledge of the mining world.
Among the natural wonders of the coast, a few kilometres from the town: Porto Paglia, Pan di Zucchero, Nebida, Cala Domestica and the sea sacks of Masua. Here, the sea has a wild beauty and is overlooked by a rugged, precipitous coastline, with captivating coves and beaches.
