The Collegio Ghislieri, founded in 1567 by Pope Pius V, is one of the oldest university colleges in Italy. The 16th century building in the heart of Pavia which houses the college can host approximately 200 students. Its central elements are the four-sided portico on the ground floor and the wide corridor on the first floor (known as the Quadrato) which gathers the students’ rooms. The chapel dates to the early 17th century and is reached by crossing the frescoed Salon dedicated to St. Pius V.
One of the college’s greatest treasures is the Library which still conserves the books acquired by the founder. Additions were made over the centuries, including numerous bequests, and today it counts almost 130,000 books. The college holds numerous teaching halls for courses, seminars and conferences and shared spaces for recreational and study purposes.
In 2002 the Aula Magna del Collegio Ghislieri, which hosts numerous civic and cultural activities and the concerts of the Ghislierimusica cycle, was inaugurated in 2002 in the ancient Church of St. Francis da Paola which looks onto Piazza Ghislieri.
