Porta Pia — Ancona

Porta Pia, Largo Caduti Sul Mare, Ancona, AN, Italia

Description

Built between 1787 and 1789 on the orders of Pope Pius VI, Porta Pia is the ancient monumental entrance to the city of Ancona. It was built to replace the Porta Capodimonte entrance, located higher up on the hill immediately behind, which it was linked to by steep walls, which we can still see the remains of to this day. The façade of the structure is made from Istrian stone and decorated with Baroque lines, while the inner part of the structure is made from tuff. In some places you can see the damage caused by various wars.

Located just before the sea, Porta Pia is in the nerve centre of Ancona, rich in important places of interest. This is where the distinctive Archi district begins, and is home to the Lazaretto of Ancona (separated from the mainland by the Mandracchio Canal), the old railway lines (no longer in use), the port, and the Largo Casanova terrace with its spectacular view.

Right next to Porta Pia is the Monument to the Fallen at Sea, located in Largo Caduti sul Mare.
