The LIPU (Italian League for the protection of birds) Oasis of Casacalenda (CB), a protected area since 1994, occupies two thirds of Bosco Casale and contains a 105 hectare oak forest, situated at an altitude of about 700m, which stretches out from the slopes of Monti Frentani between the Matese mountain range and the Adriatic Coast. It is filled with Turkey oaks, beeches, dog rose and hawthorn bushes, red lilies, broom, blackthorn flowers and dogwood berries and inhabited by about hundred species of birds, including royal kites, buzzards, sparrow hawks, golden orioles and the European honey buzzards.
The area also contains sites for butterfly observation, routes with didactic panels for the identification of flora and fauna, natural wells for amphibians, a visitor centre and an eco-play centre.
