Albiano (Trento) is today one of the main sites in Europe for the extraction, processing and international marketing of porphyry, an igneous volcanic rock suitable for outdoor use, given its resistance to extreme temperatures, and for interior decoration, thanks to a variation in colour, from red to grey, purple and brown.
The first deposits were discovered during construction of the Gardolo-Lases provincial road in 1911. Ever since, the site has been extensively mined. Numerous open-air quarries have appeared on mount Gaggio and mount Gorsa, where slabs, cubes, cordons and other stone elements for street furniture are made. The town’s central square was paved in 1975 with local porphyry.
