Tuono Base is located at an altitude of 1,543m in Malga Zonta di Passo Coe, in Folgaria (Trento). A decommissioned missile base, it was built by the Air Force and NATO during the cold war and was active from 1966 to 1977 as a defence against possible air attacks.
The base comprises a launch area which, with the control and logistics areas (this latter located lower down, in the province of Vicenza), once composed the old structure. The launch area, approx. 16 squared hectares, still holds missiles and structures hangars, radars, embankments, bunkers.
Currently the base is the only museum site in Europe dedicated to the Nike-Hercules missile defence system.
