The former prison of Trento, known as the ex-prison in via Pilati, is a Habsburg building which was adapted for use as a prison in the late 19th century, maintaining the original architectural layout. The building was closed in 2010.
The building, constructed in red Trento stone from local quarries, has a vestibule entrance accessed by a staircase and a balcony framed by balustrades and supported by decorated brackets. It is crowned with a pediment bearing the words "Palazzo di Giustizia", surmounted by a coat of arms with the Savoy cross.
To the side of the building, two long four-storey buildings hold the cells and service rooms. The cells in the central body are distributed along a walkway with a double-pitched roof. The former prison also has a chapel.
