The old Tridentum, Trento, which was founded by the Romans in the 1st century BC, played an important role back then, thanks to its privileged position linking the Italian peninsula with the rest of the European continent.
The city is steeped in history, and bears the signs of the various eras and historical events it has seen in its urban architecture, churches, museums and traditions. Perhaps the most memorable events were the sessions of the ecumenical Council of Trento, which were essential for the Catholic Church in consolidating the principles of doctrine in response to the Protestant Reform. Indeed, it was the Council that threw Trento into the European spotlight, giving it a truly cosmopolitan identity.
The city centre is surrounded by mountains, with mount Bondon standing out to the west. As you head south, you see vast lakes, pine forests and hills covered in vines. In this part of the region art and nature merge, with green spaces alternating with small mountain hamlets and ancient castles with churches, stately homes and palaces. Distinguishing features of the city are Buonconsiglio Castle, the Cathedral of San Vigilio and the Tridentine Diocesan Museum, formerly the Medieval residence of the Prince-Bishoprics.
