The Italic sanctuary of Pietrabbondante is the most important Samnite worship site of the ancient Molise.
The stunning monumental Temple B/theatre complex, has a highly scenographic position and lies on the southern slope of Monte Caraceno/Saraceno at 1000 meters of altitude. Here archaeologists have found a number of weapons and helms, taken from the enemy, and inscriptions. Thanks to these findigs, we consider this worship site as the federal sanctuary of the Samnite Pentri tribe. In this place were performed religious and political rites in honor of abstracted deities such as Honos (military honor), Virtus (military and political virtue) and Ops Consiva (opulence of the State).
The archaeological area is located within the UNESCO MAB Reserve Collemeluccio-Montedimezzo, characterized by an important faunal biodiversity and a peculiar silvopastoral system.
