Villa Muggia rises on the hills behind the New Hospital of Imola (BO) and is today in ruins. Once an 18th century hunting lodge, it was bought by the Muggia family in 1934 who entrusted its restoration to Piero Bottoni, the architect who would later become a leading exponent of 20th century Rationalism.
Preserving the most precious parts of the villa in his project, the architect decided to replace the most damaged areas with bold, spectacular solutions that could harmoniously unite new and old, while creating a refined, stunning work which included the interior decoration.
Abandonment and war damage have cancelled most of his work; however, part of the outer structure and the dining table, a futuristic shape made from a single flow of cement and marble chips, survive to demonstrate the past splendour of the place.
