The Palazzo Municipale of Cuneo has been situated in via Roma, the main thoroughfare in the historical centre, since 1775. The most ancient part of the building, overlooking via Santa Maria and via Saluzzo, was originally a College built by Jesuit Fathers in 1711 for the secondary school of Cuneo. After the suppression of the Jesuit congregation, the Municipality bought the college and extended it, adding a new wing on the present-day via Roma under the supervision of architect Francesco Martinez.
In 1837, following the building of the first aqueduct in the area, the entrance to the Palazzo Municipale was embellished with two white marble fountains positioned between the paired columns of the porticos. Inside are rooms frescoed between the 1700 and 1800s, including a richly decorated Hall of Honour which features a large Murano glass chandelier once in the Teatro Civico. The walls of the extravagant main staircase that leads to the first floor hold plaques commemorating achievements by the city and its residents, including the words of Piero Calamandrei in 1952 on the permanent value of the Resistance. The courtyard features a bronze reproduction of the model Ceirano 1903 car, designed by Benvenuto Ferrero.
