The ancient Cappa Palace has belonged in the past to the different families who alternated their dominion of the surrounding territory. The Cappas, originally from Spain, were the feudal lords of the territories of Bominaco, Caporciano, Coppito, Tussio and San Nicandro in the 16th century, becoming at that time owners of the magnificent palace that still dominates the borgo of San Nicandro in the municipality of Prata d’Ansidonia (AQ) today.
Originally a castle, whose external loggias served as military defence in 1300s have survived, was transformed into a fortified palace over the centuries according to the needs of the Cappa family. Inside are rooms of different sizes, all finely decorated with furniture and objects from different epochs. One opens onto the interior of the Church of the Madonna del Carmine also owned by the Cappa family. In the centre of the complex, a small inner courtyard provides access to underground caves, once useful as escape routes, today partly walled up and used as wine cellars.
