Inaugurated in 1926, The Spoleto-Norcia railway, in the Umbrian Appennines, was an engineering masterpiece for the time, with 377 showpieces built in just over 50km, including spiral tunnels and the bridge over river Cortaccione. Closed in 1968, after many years of disuse, it became a cycle-pedestrian path in July 2014 and can currently be travelled along as far as Piedipaterno. The route begins just outside Spoleto, on the road that leads towards Forca di Cerro. It is a dirt path. Viaducts and tunnels lead to the top which corresponds with the long Caprareccia tunnel, marking the passage into Valnerina. The descent towards Sant'Anatolia di Narco has beautiful views over the Valnerina area and unforgettable stretches inside the spiral tunnels. The road flattens at Sant'Anatolia di Narco where it runs along the river Nera and passes Castel San Felice before reaching Piedipaterno.
