Inhabited since the 6th century B.C.E. by the Etruscans and later by the Romans, the borgo of Corciano is a continual succession of alleys, staircases, palaces, towers, gardens, churches and bell towers. Looming above this intact medieval structure is the castle, wrapped in a high protective wall.
The tower of Porta Santa Maria rises from the historical centre while the central piazza Coragino has a well from the 1500s. Other structures include the Palazzo Municipale, the 16th century residence of the Dukes of Corgna; the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo and the Palazzo dei Priori; the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption which houses a painting on wood of the Assumption (1513) by Perugino and Benedetto Bonfigli’s Gonfalone (1472); and the Gothic Church-Museum of St Francis with late 13th/early 14th century frescoes. Facing the hill of Corciano on a hilltop covered with olive groves is the Church of St Augustine (1334) with 18th century oil paintings and wooden statues of patron saints Michael Archangel, Sebastian, Roch and Macarius.
