Todi is a medieval town that rises from a hill to dominate the Valley of the Tiber. Surrounded by three perimeter walls (Etruscan, Roman and Medieval), the pulsing heart of the town is the splendid Piazza del Popolo where the most important buildings of the historical centre cluster.
Built between 1214 and 1228, the Palazzo del Popolo, also known as Palazzo Vecchio, is one of the most ancient commune buildings in Italy. It has a wide loggia with a central column on the ground floor and is linked to the Gothic Palazzo del Capitano (late 13th century) known as Palazzo Nuovo by a 17th century ramp. Today, the two buildings house the Town Hall and the civic museums.
The Duomo of Our Lady of the Annunciation, was built in the 12th century over the remains of a temple to Apollo and has a Romanesque facade with a wide staircase.
Nearby, the 13th century Church of St. Fortunato, the city patron, conserves the tomb of the humanist poet Jacopone da Todi in its crypt. Outside the 13th century walls stands the Temple of Consolation, built in the 16th century to a design by Bramante.
