Cerreto's strategic position was the cause of bitter disputes between Spoleto and Norcia in the Middle Ages. Most of the village's history occurred within the orbit of the Duchy of Spoleto, and later the Papal States until the establishment of the Kingdom of Italy.
The historic center retains stretches of its medieval walls, the Civic Tower and a number of fine religious buildings, such as the former monastery of San Giacomo, founded in 13th century and beautifully renovated, which houses the14-16th-centuries frescoes of the Umbrian school. Also worthy of attention are: the Renaissance Church of Santa Maria De Libera, with two overlapping sacred spaces and precious 14-15th century frescoes and the Church of Santa Maria Annunziata, built in 1517 in the highest part of the village.
The attractive hamlet of Borgo Cerreto is located along the state road below the village, where remains of the defensive walls and towers can be seen. This is also the site of the 13th-century Gothic Church of St. Lawrence.
Nearby, in the hamlet of Ponte, features the notable Church of Santa Maria Assunta, a Romanesque parish church whose rectangular façade has a handsome rose window and a double row of arches. Also in the area, the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Stella near Ruscio is a 17th-century Augustinian hermitage, with a church and the cells of the hermits in the rock.
