The Rocca del Leone (Lion's Fortress) in Castiglione del Lago (PG) dominates the eastern part of Lake Trasimeno. It has the shape of an irregular pentagon with crenellated Guelph walls and four towers in defence of the main corners; an imposing triangular keep is positioned inside the walls.
Building began at the beginning of the 12th century, under Emperor Frederick II who intended to include the fortress in the defensive system that started in Apulia and crossed the whole of Italy.
During the war between Perugia and Arezzo at end of 12th century, the pre-existing Castello del Leone (Castle of the Lion), was severely damaged and, in 1297, the Perugia magistrates decided to fortify the residential part and build a fortress inside the castle. The additional interventions and the internal system of the Mastio (keep) meant that it was considered one of Europe’s most impregnable castles in the the 16th century.
