The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Miracles is located just outside the walls of Castel Rigone, a small hamlet of Passignano sul Trasimeno (PG), and is one of the best examples of Renaissance building present in Umbria. Its name Maria Santissima dei Miracoli (Holy Mary of Miracles) derives from its construction, in 1494, as a place of protection from the plague. The structure was entirely made of sandstone: the stumpy bell tower was rebuilt in 1851, the previous one collapsed in 1531. The sanctuary has a Latin cross plan, with a single wide nave; on the left wall are frescoes of the Perugian school dating to the 16th century. The right arm of the transept has a small chapel of pietra serena – gray sandstone – with a wooden Crucifix. The apse features an Epiphany painted by Domenico Alfani following cartons by Rosso Fiorentino. The chapel in the left transept, also in pietra serena, has an image of the Madonna and Child, dated to the late 16th century.
