The State Archive of Turin has made use of a second building, larger than the first, from 1925. The Palazzo del San Luigi was originally commissioned by the Opera Pio San Luigi Gonzaga as a 100-bed hospital in 1817. When the hospital was no longer able to service the increasing urban population, it passed to the Municipality and in 1925 was selected as the location for the three sections of the State Archive, previously housed in separate buildings, considered external to the Court Archive – the Finance, War, Justice Archives – which from then on were known as the “Sezioni Riunite”.
The work to adapt the building to its new use completely changed its appearance: with the addition of the Valdocco wing, situated between the original building and the nearby corso of the same name, which was built to address the recurring need for space, the ancient palace lost its original architectural style. Only in 1980 did significant restoration and renovation work begin (it would last for more than 2 decades) to reclaim as much as possible of the building’s original appearance while also making it functional and modern.
