Standing sentinel over the Peligna valley, Roccacasale (Province of L’Aquila) is a small village clinging to the undulating slopes of mount Morrone and crowned by the De Sanctis Castle with its triangular enclosure. The inexorable passing of time has certainly damaged the fortress which has however conserved its great charm especially when wreathed in thin mist or during night darkness when curated lighting highlights its outline, draping it in the colours of the Italian flag.
The ascending alleyways, stone houses, ancient cellars, church, square, castle and mountain create the kind of evocative atmosphere that links Roccacasale with many villages in inner Abruzzo. However, here there is a certain additional touch of magic which comes from the traditional use of naturally occurring herbs and the wealth of stories about fairies, enchanters, stolen children, spells and hidden treasures.
Near the castle is the colle delle Fate, which houses an ancient Italic fortified mountain settlement and cisterns.
