Casa del Podestà (House of the Podestà or Chief Magistrate) in Lonato (province of Brescia) was built in the mid 1400s as the seat for the representative of the Venetian Republic which controlled the territory.
It was bought by the lawyer and liberal politician, Ugo Da Como, in 1906. Aware of its historical importance, he had the place completely restored to its ancient dignity by architect Antonio Tagliaferri of Brescia. A noted collector, Da Como filled his residence with important pieces, furniture, furnishings, paintings and sculptures from the time of its construction, making it one of the best-preserved house-museums in Lombardy.
The Casa del Podestà is also a bonafide “house library” with a collection of about 50,000 volumes and is considered one of the most significant private collections in Northern Italy.
