Perfectly conserved, porta Romana was part of the external city walls that defended the village of Barbarano Romano (province of Viterbo). The most ancient, and innermost, of the walls dates to the 11th century and is part of the so-called “castle”, the second wall is from the 13th-14th century and has square towers while the last, 15th century, has cylindrical towers, including one that dominates porta Romana. Military expertise of the time considered circular towers better able to deviate gunshot.
The tower was modified in 1863, an edicola (shrine) and clock (still present today) were added. Porta Romana is still the symbol of the town and the border between ancient borgo and new city nucleus.
