The vecchia strada della Valcellina is an enchanting route that crosses the Riserva naturale della Forra del Cellina, one of the most beautiful and spectacular natural parks in Friuli Venezia Giulia. The crystalline water and deep canyons in the rockface make this stretch of road, once the only link between the valley and the plain, unforgettable. Today visitors come from every corner of the globe to see the colours that reflect off the clear, blue-green waters of the Cellina river in a unique setting.
The Riserva naturale Forra del Cellina covers at least 300 hectares across the municipalities of Andreis, Barcis and Montereale Valcellina and is managed by Parco delle Dolomiti Friulane.
The importance of the Reserve is mostly due to its geomorphological characteristics: it is, in fact, a bona fide gorge, carved out of the limestone sediment by the constant movement of water, waterfalls and other forms of erosion. It looks just like a canyon, it is the largest in the region and certainly one of the most spectacular in the country. There are interesting botanical rarities found here, linked to the special conditions created by the microclimate. The Dint pathway, which begins near the visitor centre, offers spectacular views over the Gorge.
