Artefacts deriving from a Bronze Age civilization that lived in stilt houses on the shore of lake Ledro make the lake an archaeological site and a museum of universal relevance. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011.
The remains of the stilt houses were brought to light in autumn 1929 when the water level of the lake dropped because of building work on the hydroelectric power station of Riva del Garda. Over ten thousand poles appeared on the lake’s southern shore, bearing witness to one of the largest prehistoric settlements discovered in Italy to date, today considered one of the most important in the Alpine range.
A museum was built in the 1970’s and completely renovated in 2019. Combining reconstruction and the original remains of the village dating to 2,200-1,350 BCE, it offers an immersive experience into daily life in the Bronze Age. On display are the village’s artisanal products and four huts complete with furnishings and objects that provide a look at prehistoric life.
