Carrara stars in ‘The Brutalist’ with Adrien Brody. Silver Lion for Best Direction at Venice 81

Carrara has a starring role in the international production Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, awarded the Silver Lion for Best Direction at Venezia 81. The cast includes Academy Award winner Adrien BrodyGuy Pearce and Felicity Jones. From Budapest, the production moved to Carrara where locations included the historic storefront of antica drogheria Riacci in corso Rosselli, and the Bettogli and Bombarda quarries.

Venice also features along with archive material from the first Architecture Biennale was included.

The film tells the story of László Toth (Adrien Brody), a visionary Hungarian architect who has fled Europe for the United States with his wife Erzsébet (Felicity Jones) in the aftermath of WWI. A meeting with a mysterious, wealthy client (Guy Pearce) changes their lives forever. He asks László to design a huge Modernist monument, destined to become a key feature in the urban skyline, and will test the limits of his relationship with his wife.

The cast includes Joe AlwynRaffey CassidyAlessandro NivolaIssach De BankoléStacy Martin. Corvet also wrote the screenplay, which covers a time period of 30 years, with Mona Fastvold. Lol Crawley was DP; Daniel Blumberg wrote the music.

The international coproduction was helmed by Trevor Matthews and Nick Gordon (Brookstreet UK) with American partners: Andrew Morrison (Yellow Bear), Andrew Lauren (Andrew Lauren Productions) and DJ Gugenheim. Coproducers were Intake Films (UK) and Proton Cinema (Hungary), while further financing came from Lip Sync Productions, Richmond Pictures, Meyohas Studio, Carte Blanche and the production company Cofiloisirs (France).
