“We rip out so much of ourselves to be cured of things faster than we should that we go bankrupt by the age of thirty and have less to offer each time we start with someone new. But to feel nothing so as not to feel anything… what a waste!”
While Andrè Aciman’s book upon which the film is based is set in Liguria, Guadagnino chose the evocative colours of the countryside of Cremona near Pandino (CR) and Lodi, near Crespiatica (LO), as the sun-drenched backdrop to the two protagonists’ bike rides. It is an enchanting and timeless landscape, the perfect setting for the delicate and tormented love story between Oliver and Elio.
Elio’s family lives in Villa Albergoni, a residence surrounded by eight hectares of park in Moscazzano in the province of Cremona. The film takes us back to a summer in the 1980s, with bookcases and tables overflowing with books and long tables, a meeting point for family and friends, set out on a veranda, shaded by fruit trees.
This is the starting point for the bike rides of the protagonists, one of which takes place near Crema. The camera lingers specifically on piazza Duomo (with the Torrazzo arch) where Oliver and Elio stop off for a drink, but the film generally takes in the entire old town, with a trip to Pandino, in piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, whose monumento dell’Alpino and Visconti-style castle appear in the background of some scenes.
The protagonists’ excursions take them to Fontanili di Capralba (CR) with its natural springs, more specifically the Fontanile Quarantina in the village of Farinate, where Elio confesses to going to read, and where he steals a kiss from Oliver for the first time. Another location used is the Laghetto dei Riflessi in Ricengo (CR).
The discovery of an archaeological site takes Professor Perlman, together with his son and student, to Sirmione (BS) in Lower Garda. The scene was filmed in the Grottoes of Catullus Archaeological Park and on Giamaica Beach, from on land and the lake itself.
Oliver’s last days in Italy take him to Bergamo, to conclude his research. Finally he and Elio have a chance to confront their feelings in the open. In one rather aesthetically-pleasing scene, the two boys run across a grassy slope at the base of the Serio Falls in Valbondione (BG), shouting one another's names with Mystery of Love by Sufjan Stevens, which was written especially for the film, playing in the background.
In Upper Bergamo, Elio and Oliver listen to music with a group of kids they’ve just met, and dance in Piazza Rosate and Santa Maria Maggiore. Shortly afterwards, they kiss under the cover of darkness in piazza Duomo.
