Famous for the curative powers of its thermal waters, Sirmione stands on the peninsula of the same name that extends for about 4km along the southern bank of Lake Garda, dividing it in two. Writers, including Catullus, Stendhal, Lawrence and Goethe, have celebrated its artistic and environmental beauty in their work.
Inhabited since the bronze age, it was a holiday destination for the Romans as testified to by the Grotte di Catullo, a Roman domus built between the late first century B.C.E. and the first century C.E. on the point of the Sirmione Peninsula.
The perimeter walls and the imposing Rocca, which defends the only southern access point to the residential centre, were built during the domination of the Scaligera family in the 13th century. The Scaligero Castle is surrounded by the lake and defended by three towers and a 47m keep. To the east, the fortified dock offered shelter to the fleet.
