Police Commissioner Alfonso Le Rose (Pierfrancesco Favino) is a hero from Calabria: he lives with his family in the Monteverde Vecchio neighbourhood of Rome, with a view over the cupola of St. Peter’s Basilica where one morning in 1976 he is the target of a terrorist attack. Having discovered that ten-year-old Valerio, his older son, has witnessed the shooting, he decides to take his family to Calabria where his elderly parents and many relatives live. That summer Valerio will meet Christian: both boys have witnessed the violence of adults. The film features numerous locations in Calabria: on the Tyrrhenian side: Scilla, Palmi; the Parco nazionale della Sila, between Lorica and lake Arvo; and on the Ionian side: Caminia, Riace and Castle San Fili in Stignano, whose ruins are seen when the two boys go on a bike ride.
