The Costa Viola (Reggio Calabria) overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea near the Strait of Messina, extending for about 35km through the villages of Palmi, Seminara, Bagnara Calabra, Scilla and Villa San Giovanni. This stretch of coastline, sandwiched between sea and mountains, is a continual unfolding of beaches, bays, cliffs and vines above the sea. Its name derives from the purple colour that appears in the evening when the different landscapes, seafloors and Mediterranean undergrowth mingle with the sulphuric gas particles from the nearby volcano of Stromboli.
This coastal stretch features splendid sea floors, resembling those of the Tropics. It has many nooks and crannies, such as the Sparviero cave, the Monk’s cave and the Swallows’ cave, destinations favoured by practitioners of underwater fishing. The evocative scoglio dell’Ulivo, a stretch of rock eroded by the sea holding a 400-year-old olive tree, bent by the wind, can be seen across the transparent water near the beach of the tonnara di Palmi.
