The film was shot and set entirely in Abruzzo: in the Fucine basin between Trasacco and Avezzano, in Bussi sul Tirino and Pescara.
We’re in Abruzzo, more specifically Bussi sul Tirino (PE), a small sheltered town on the hills east of Gran Sasso. The Edison Chimiche factory (actually Solvay Chimica Bussi), which gives work to lots of families in the area, is in crisis and in danger of partial closure. The demonstrations and trade union meetings (one of which is held in Piazza Tirino) come to nothing: the firings come and a number of workers are laid off. One of them is Cenzo, who has been working at the factory for 30 years. He is reassigned to social work in the middle of nowhere in the mountains, where he sees a colleague of his commit suicide and, after attending the funeral procession in Via Progresso, falls into a state of depression and shuts himself away at home.
His wife leaves him and takes the train to Bussi Officine (Bussi sul Tirino railway station) to head to Pescara, where she’s found a job. Cenzo’s son Vince, 20 years-old, also wants to leave, and one day waves his father goodbye with a closed fist, like he always does, from outside the house on Rua dei Maniscalchi, to leave forever. He gets in the car and we see him driving down a scenic mountain road, Via Tremonti, to Pescara. We see the city’s tourist port, the pier, the station and the streets of the city centre. It is here that Vince starts working as an assistant chef and meets Genny. She is the same age as him, from Trasacco (in Marsica), and works as a waitress.
They meet again a few months later in the closing scenes of the film, at Termini station in Rome, where Vince has moved to attend university.

In the province of Pescara, professional and emotional desires come to a head over the course of one summer.
