During the economic boom, Italy underwent great social changes and transformations but some archaic practices such as proxy weddings were still occurring in areas of the South. Maria (Serena Rossi) is a young woman from Calabria who decides to help her family with its overwhelming debt by accepting a proxy wedding to Vittorio Bassi (Maurizio Donadoni), a coarse farmer from Vicenza. At the altar, however, she discovers that she will not be marrying Vittorio but his nephew Italo (Giorgio Marchesi).
As often happens when recreating environments in the world of drama and film, the locations used to evoke the 1960s were not always those suggested; the regions of Calabria and Veneto in the 1960s were actually shot in Apulia and Piedmont, with the addition of several interior shoots in Rome.
In Apulia the locations were principally in the Gargano area, in Monte Sant’Angelo, on the coastline of Peschici and in the historical centre and beaches of Vieste, in particular Baia di Campi, San Felice, Portonuovo.
The production shot for 4 weeks in Piedmont on a farm inside the Parco della Pellerina and in Carignano, before going to Fontanetto Po and Crescentino in the area of Vercelli.
