Una femmina is the debut film from Francesco Costabile, freely inspired by the novel Fimmine Ribelli. Come le donne salveranno il Paese dalla ‘ndrangheta by Lirio Abbate.
The story is about Rosa (newcomer Lina Siciliano), a girl with a restless and rebellious soul, who represents the many other women with the courage to break with the blood ties and codes of honour of the 'ndrangheta. She lives with her grandmother Berta (Anna Maria De Luca), aunt Rita (Simona Malato), cousin Natale (Luca Massaro) and uncle Tore (Fabrizio Ferracane) in an unspecified village in Calabria, between the mountains and dry rivers of Cosenza and Aspromonte.
Rosa can clearly see the dictatorial, chauvinist regime that her uncle has installed to manage the family. But she soon discovers that the rural Calabrian context, intertwined with organized crime, makes any hope of rebellion unacceptable and dangerous as her mother learned the hard way.
Locations included many small municipalities in the hinterland of the riviera dei Cedri. In particular, Verbicaro (Cosenza) in the Pollino National Park whose narrow streets and steeply-built houses provide the setting for the religious procession in the emblematic final sequence.
Other locations include Orsomarso, Papasidero, Santa Maria del Cedro and San Donato di Ninea.
