The Pollino mountain range is part of the Southern Apennines on the border between Basilicata and Calabria. Its peaks, some of the highest in South Italy, are covered with snow for much of the year. At 2,200+ m above sea level, it offers a view from the Tyrrhenian coast of Maratea, Praia a Mare and Belvedere Marittimo in the west to the Ionian Coast from Sibari to Metaponto in the east.
The mountain range is the heart of the Parco Nazionale del Pollino, the largest park in Italy, which crosses 56 municipalities, including 9 mountain communities and 4 reserves: Rubbio in Basilicata, Raganello, Lao and Argentino in Calabria. Vegetation is abundant due to the large and varied territory that the park covers. Symbol of the park is the pino loricato or Bosnian pine, a rare species able to adapt to the most hostile environments, such as high altitude and very steep slopes. The largest animal populations are wolf, mountain goat, eagle and beaver.
