Located at 120m above sea level on the eastern bulwarks of the Calabrian Apennines in the Argentino river valley, Orsomarso (Cosenza) is a small village of medieval origins that is part of the Pollino National Park. Half hidden behind high Karst rocks, immersed in woods of Mediterranean undergrowth, it is considered one of the wildest and most charming corners of Southern Italy.
It expanded in the Middle Ages with the arrival of hundreds of Basilian monks from the East. Of interest are the Clock tower in the main square, the cave of Our Lady of Lourdes, the 17th century Church of St. John Baptist and the Church of the Most Holy Saviour. The ancient Church of Our Lady of Mércuri, in the wild mountain territory of the Lao valley, built in the 11th century over a pre-existing pagan temple, is of notable historic importance and still conserves a terracotta image of the Madonna del Mercurio, whose glass eyes were added in the 1600s.
