Italian landscapes … on the road

There are those who love to travel on foot, walking the cities or using the metro, photographing monuments and hopping onto public transport, and there are those who love to travel by car. The landscape can differ significantly for the latter category as cars perform best on empty, easy roads avoiding the traffic that accumulates while waiting for the lights to turn green. For those who love travelling by car, the outside world is a single flow that rushes past on the horizon, as poetic as it is short-lived.  At times, to enjoy it properly, one has to find a rest area, stop, park and get out of the car.  Those who enjoy engines and landscapes shouldn’t miss their transposition to videogames:  there is a whole range of driving games set in Italy, representing the country from top to bottom and providing unforgettable views for those who have the time to lean out of the window and look beyond the edges of the circuit.  The speeds reached here are undoubtedly faster than those permitted on motorways or unpaved roads: but there’s nothing stopping us from following in the tracks of these speedsters on the hunt for the perfect view and memorable photographs.

Piazza Duomo – Milan

Through the centre of Milan

Let’s set off from Lombardy of a morning with Race Driver:  GRID.  Here is a chance to drive past famous monuments and dreamy alleyways as the sportscars can race through the historical centre of Milan, totally impossible in real life.  The circuit circles the Duomo of Milan, past Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II and the equestrian statue of the King:  an unescapably urban landscape and an interesting departure point for our journey.  Time to fill the tank, check the tyre pressure and then let’s head south.

Finale Ligure

Towards the coast of Liguria

With Forza Horizon 2 we head to Liguria, where imaginary places (Castelletto, Montellino, San Giovanni) evoke the beauty of the views offered by the Riviera dei Fiori with uncanny precision.  Prepare to be surprised when the Duomo of Amalfi peeks out between the cliffs, shorelines and beach umbrellas, galleries and little villages perched on rocky spurs, ice cream parlours and local shops, multitudes of flowers and the sea rocking whitely beneath the docked ferries. Certainly many a player will be quick to spot this contamination of real-life settings which adds colour to the detail but equally, it could also go unnoticed by those drivers fascinated by the colours of the vegetation, roads and waters in the sunlight.

Piazza del Campo – Siena

From Tuscan hills to the Colosseum

We head towards the centre of the country with Gran Turismo 5, which drives in particular through Tuscany and Rome:  the game offers the chance to climb the hills of Siena and take a look around the city, including piazza del Campo (the game offers it as the setting for a go-kart race or suggests taking picturesque shots with photo mode).  Later there will be the chance to gun the engines and roar along the gentle curves and slopes of the yellow and orange Tuscan vegatation, speeding between vineyards surrounded by farms and olive groves.  There’s just time for a pitstop at San Gimignano to fill up, where photo mode again offers wonderful pictures of the town centre.  Heading south, the Rome circuit passes by the Colosseum:  the marvellous amphitheatre embellishing the city’s profile in the background.

Positano

Postcards from Southern Italy

As evening begins to gather, we reach the Amalfi Coast and Positano: Forza Motorsport 3& 4 takes us down imaginary routes inspired by the countryside of the region of Campania.  Here, at times, road surfaces are the cobblestones more common to urban settings, while the buildings perched over the sea, framed by rolling, dry hills, become the highlights of an unforgettable landscape.  It is hard to tell if the greater attraction of the game is the competition itself or admiring the settings.  Bathed in summer light, the buildings on the roads of Positano, whose architecture is typical of the local area, enchant both virtual and real-life drivers.
Nights falls and it is time to kill the engines and rest a while.  We’ll do that while admiring the picturesque lights of the Duomo of Syracuse, included in the photo mode locations of Gran Turismo 6.  We can look at the photos taken during the trip before we set off again:  precious images that structure memories, helping to recreate Italy with the stunning views the country offers those willing to look around, curve after curve.
