Finale Ligure, in the province of Savona, stands on the Ligurian Riviera di Ponente (Coast of the Setting sun), between the promontories of Caprazoppa and Capo Noli. The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times: the archaeological area of Arene Candide conserves some of the most ancient Stone Age tombs in Europe. During the Middle Ages, the village saw the rise of the powerful Marquisate del Finale, which was first controlled by the Del Carretto family and later the object of many political changes. In 1927 the municipality was expanded to include: Varigotti; the recently built Finalmarina, a popular tourist destination; Finalpia, the original settlement on the coast; and Finalborgo, the ancient seat of the Marquisate, which comprises the surviving 14th century walls and the Castles of Govone and St. John.
The varied territory of Finale Ligure offers many possibilities. Inland the countryside is wide and green with a strong archaeological and landscape component, including the Altopiano della Manie to the east, while the area surrounding the town, the Finalese, has an unusual geological conformation, the Pietra del Finale, with many crevices and caves of great archaeological importance.
