The small town of Castel Trosino is located a few kilometres from Ascoli and can be reached by following the road that passes the small town of Borgo Cartaro, after the Porta Cartara bridge.
The castle rises from the peak of the travertine cliff, a single landmass that separated from offshoots of Colle San Marco long ago. The town can only be reached from one side, as the others stand at a sheer drop over the valley below, where the Castellano Stream flows.
The town, with its typically Medieval appearance, close-knit and isolated on the high plain, enjoys an extensive view and is an excellent point for observing the surrounding landscape.
The town appears to be made entirely of local travertine stone, material used both for its construction and conservation. The oldest part of the historical centre are the houses inside the thick perimeter walls, which can be accessed through the gateway under a rounded arch.
