The Villarey barracks is a building in Ancona that was originally built for military purposes, designed by Giuseppe Morando. It currently houses the faculty of economics of the Polytechnic University of the Marches.
Built between 1865 and 1867, when Ancona was declared “the premier fortress for the Kingdom of Italy” by the new king, the barracks could house over 1,200 soldiers and was named for General Villarey, who died a hero in the Battle of Custoza in 1866, during the Third Italian War of Independence. The building is square with sides measuring 100m, and has a vast internal courtyard (62m x 56m) bordered by covered walkways. Other features of the building are: the flat ashlar at its base, the double windows (arranged in pairs) set into rounded arches, and the dry-stone wall with retaining walls made from white stone from the Conero region and pink stone from the Furlo Pass.
