The ancient borgo of Spilimbergo (PN) developed during the Medieval and Renaissance periods. Located on the shore of the Tagliamento river, it revolves around a castle where the Borgo Vecchio and Valbruna rose up to be encircled by thick walls. It was accessed through the so-called Eastern tower. Borgo di Mezzo, Broiluccio (present-day piazza Borgolucido) and Borgo Nuovo grew up in the 14th century. A new city wall was built to protect these borgos of which the Western tower remains.
The urban centre conserves its original Medieval layout: piazza del Duomo in the centre features the Palazzo de Daziaro to the west and to the north, the loggia della Macia whose column still displays the macia, an ancient trade unit used to measure length.
Spilimbergo is also the location for the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli, founded in 1922, which teaches Roman, Byzantine and modern mosaic techniques.
