At 170km long, the Tagliamento is the most important river in the region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, and one of the few in Europe to have preserved an unusual structure featuring intertwined canals.
Beginning near Passo della Mauria, in the municipality of Lorenzago di Cadore (BL), it crosses Carnia, marks the border between the regions of Friuli Venezia Giulia and Veneto, previously the provinces of Pordenone and Udine, and eventually pours into the Gulf of Venice between Lignano Sabbiadoro and Bibione.
The main residential areas on the Tagliamento include Latisana and San Michele al Tagliamento, while Tolmezzo, Enemonzo, Gemona del Friuli, Trasaghis, San Daniele del Friuli, Spilimbergo, Valvasone, Sedegliano, Codroipo, and San Vito al Tagliamento are all very close to the river course.
