The town of Amelia is surrounded by an imposing perimeter wall, a fortification built between 300-200 B.C.E. Four gates open off the walls of the polygon: Porta Romana, the main entrance to the town, Porta Posterola, Porta Leone IV and Porta della Valle.
The Cathedral is the most important religious building in Amelia, a town that is full of architectural gems including: the Monastery of San Magno, the Church of St. Francis, the Church of St. Augustine and the rural Church of Our Lady delle Cinque Fonti which, according to legend, provided hospitality to St. Francis; the 15th century Palazzo Nacci, 16th century Palazzo Farrattini and Palazzo Petrignani, the Torre Civica, symbol of the freedom of the Medieval communes and the splendid 18th century theatre are all notable.
There are also surprises beneath the surface of Amelia, including ancient Roman cisterns, works of hydraulic engineering built during the 2nd century C.E. (approximately), accessible from piazza Matteotti.
