Asti is known for its wines and its city center, which has maintained the medieval urban structure. The Middle Ages has left evident traces in the main monuments of the city, the Cathedral, the Collegiate of San Secondo, the Complex of San Pietro in Consavia, in the details of palaces and streets and in its many towers, for which it is also known as the City of a Hundred Towers. The best-known include: Torre del Comentini; the octagonally-shaped Torre de Regibus; Torre Troiana in piazza Medici, and the oldest, Torre Rossa di San Secondo. The baroque noble mansions and the 19th-century elegant squares create a harmonious whole with the elegant windows of the Liberty shops.
The city’s past is brought to life every year with the Palio, the oldest in Italy, where jockeys have raced their horses for eight centuries.
