A very hard and resistant marble is extracted from mount Tramontana in the Lasa valley (Bolzano); it is one the most valuable marbles because of its homogeneous appearance and typically translucent veinless white surface.
The extraction of marble in the Acqua Bianca quarry, at an altitude of 1,567 metres, began in 1883. Extraction was moved the mountains in 1900 when the deposits began to end, although the fall of rocks and avalanches made it harder to exploit. Over the years since, the terraced extraction of marble blocks inside the mountain has formed an articulated tunnel network of marble galleries up to 40 meters high, a scenario in continuous transformation thanks to powerful technical equipment and moving light.
