Ancona’s Pincio Park, which was built after the siege of Rome of 1870, is the oldest public park in the city. It is located on Santo Stefano Hill almost 100m above sea level, and its viewpoint affords a spectacular view over the sea, the hills and the city, of which you can see many of its main sites and points of interest: Palazzo del Governo, the Churches of San Domenico and San Francesco alle Scale, Ancona Cathedral, Piazza Cavour, the ancient port, the old lighthouse, Campo degli Ebrei and the Cassero.
The viewpoint is a picturesque area with the headstones of the Monument to the Resistance, while in another area of the park, near the play area, skate rink and football pitches, the 19th-century walls provide an impressive backdrop. This stretch of walls once served as a link between the Lunetta Santo Stefano (located near the park), an imposing fortress built on the orders of Napoleon, and the Renaissance Citadel (slightly further away), located on Astagno Hill.
