Description

Built in the 18^th century, the Church of St. Mary Major stands on the square of the same name in Ispica (RG), bounded by a loggia wall with 23 doors, the work of the architect Sinatra di Noto. The Baroque Basilica has a light-coloured façade and is decorated with Corinthian capitols and statues of St. Gregory and St. Rosalia at each end. Adjacent to the cathedral is a bell tower from the 1700s. The church, on a Latin cross with three naves, houses numerous paintings and statues, including one of the Flagellated Christ saved from the 17^th century earthquake which has become the focus for particular devotion with emotional rites during Holy Week.
